Client Journey: Emma

The Challenge

Emma is currently studying illustration at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design in Dundee. She came to Big Sis Coaching as she wanted to learn how to pitch her pieces more effectively to publication outlets, buyers, or other collaborators in the future.

What Happened During the Session

Using the theorist Joseph Campbell’s “Hero’s Journey” as a framework, I guided Emma in a reflective writing exercise to unpack the bigger story behind her creations: where her motivations as an illustrator came from; why she was drawn to using certain tools, symbols, and aesthetic styles over others; and the broader cultural themes that her portfolio was in dialogue with.

We then distilled these insights into a bullet point list summarising what Emma’s art was “about” - not only to her personally, but in the ways that it might touch on more universal themes and, thus, be of beneficial value to viewers. We ended by using this list to brainstorm a template pitch that Emma could keep building on in the years to come, so as to describe her creations and philosophy fluently in professional settings.

What Emma Said

"I really enjoyed this session. Shze-Hui was exceptionally well prepared, patient, and explained everything in a clear and encouraging way. The session was well structured and helped me better understand how to communicate the value and identity of my artwork.

I left with a much stronger sense of how to pitch both myself and my work with confidence. I would wholeheartedly recommend this session to any artist looking to develop their creative practice and gain greater confidence in presenting their work."
